About Us

Make Room is a hybrid organization that combines for-profit and non-profit efforts to create sustainable, affordable workforce housing. Our mission is to help middle-class renters build generational wealth through homeownership. Through our for-profit arm, we develop affordable single-family homes. Our non-profit arm provides resources such as down payment and closing cost assistance, as well as homebuyer preparation courses.

We aim to address several key challenges faced by the working middle class living in the American South:

  • Lack of affordable pathways to homeownership

  • Limited opportunities for building and preserving wealth

  • Shortage of affordable, climate-friendly, and climate-resilient housing options

Our Why

For many in America’s middle class, regardless of race, religion, or background, the grind of long workdays leaves little time to savor life’s simple pleasures. Despite earning decent wages, we often find ourselves in a financial gray area—paying the highest percentage of taxes, making too much to qualify for assistance, yet not enough to break free from the middle-class cycle.

This relentless focus on just making ends meet traps many in an endless loop of work without growth. While various efforts aim to address this, the most significant burden we face is housing. The rising cost of living directly impacts our ability to build wealth, grow our families and improve our quality of life.

At Make Room, we believe housing should be a pathway to stability, not a sacrifice. By creating affordable, sustainable housing options, we can help families secure their futures without compromising their livelihoods. Our mission is to rethink housing as a smart investment—one that enhances, rather than threatens, the well-being of individuals and communities. Together, we can reshape how we live and build a future where thriving is possible for all.
